The Sacrament of Imagination

An abnormal Sunday approaches
When Church pews normally filled
Lie dormant and desolate
As the faithful search for ways
To fill the void
In their schedule
And in their hearts

Yet ironically
Many who would normally spend
Their Sunday morning
In bed
Or on their couch
Or at the golf course
Wish there was a House of Prayer
To go to instead
On this strange Sabbath

Given the enormity
Of the invisible hand that grips the world
It would be nice to grasp
Someone else’s hand
And pray together
It would be comforting to hug
Someone else’s neck
And exchange pleasantries
It would be encouraging to kneel
And receive communion together
And know we are not alone

But these are precisely
The human comforts denied
At such a time as this
But even alone
We are not alone
And even with social distance
There is no distance
Because the Love that moves the stars
Dwells within our hearts
And connects us together
As one mystical Body spread across creation
And that Love calls to us
In solitude
In silence
In stillness
In sabbath rest
To partake in the Sacrament of Imagination

Let Love Divine so fill your imagination
So control your will
So consume your heart
That you transcend the dead dreams
Of the world "as it is"
And imagine what it could look like
For God’s Kingdom to come
For God’s will to be done
On Earth as in Heaven
To imagine a world
Where all of God’s children
Have daily bread to eat
Free from the debts that enslave them
Delivered from the evil that binds them
So we all may share in Love’s Kingdom
And partake of Love’s Power
That we may reveal Love’s Glory.
Now and evermore.
Amen.

This is a bunch of incoherent babble to make us think hard about our incredible love affair with the God of the universe, our astounding infidelities against God, and God's incredible grace to heal and restore us through Christ.
