A Prayer for Juneteenth

I wrote this as a private devotion as I reflected on Juneteenth. Perhaps it might help you or your faith community.

O LORD our God, you brought your people out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You also led this nation through trial and turmoil, through bloodshed and heartache, to abolish the horrible iniquity of owning your children as property, and abusing them as slaves. Help us celebrate the concrete strides we have made toward realizing your values of liberty and justice for all, and use this celebration as motivation to continue to strive toward greater and greater dignity and opportunity for all your children, from every tribe and tongue, race and ethnicity, culture and identity. As we remember the trials and triumphs of our black sisters and brothers who bear the trauma of slavery in their families and communities, may we all follow the Path of Christ, who came to bring good news to the poor, and set the captives free from all forms of bondage and degradation. We ask all this as members of Christ’s Body in the power of his Spirit. Amen.

Inspired by:

Deuteronomy 5.6
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

The Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Luke 4.18-19, 21
Jesus said “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” … Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

This is a bunch of incoherent babble to make us think hard about our incredible love affair with the God of the universe, our astounding infidelities against God, and God's incredible grace to heal and restore us through Christ.
