Two Visions of Education

(Click on the chart for a better view of what I am talking about)

Just a quick meditation on what Education is, and why we educate people. What is the purpose of education? Is it transformation or information?
We can see education as transformation: To shape and mold human beings into a certain kind of person, with certain values and skills and habits, which will in turn shape their destiny and how they impact their family, community, and world.

Or we can see education as merely information: To supply people certain words and phrases so they can score well on tests, to get diplomas and certifications and awards with the right names on them, so they can get high paying jobs.

I think often our "customer base" in private education only thinks of the value of education as information. And I can understand that. Because after all, I too want my children to get into a good college, and have a good job, and live a good life. But our job as educational institutions is to shape and mold families to see that education is transformation first and foremost. Because only a transformational vision of Education will have any lasting value in the sight of God, of society, and of the people who are educated.

Ultimately, our worth as an educational institution is not found merely in customer experience, which is ephemeral. It is found in the quality of the students we graduate and send into the world to impact that world. Our "product" is people, and we have to ask if our "production process" is producing people of virtue and meaning and character and ability. Is this the most effective and efficient to produce leaders who are people of Wisdom, Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Reverence?

This is a bunch of incoherent babble to make us think hard about our incredible love affair with the God of the universe, our astounding infidelities against God, and God's incredible grace to heal and restore us through Christ.
